Accutane (also known as isotretinoin) is prescribed by dermatologists as a last
resort for people with severe, disfiguring acne. It is manufactured by Roche Pharmaceuticals.
Its known side effects include increased sensitivity to sunlight and birth defects.
Women are warned not to get pregnant while taking Accutane.
According to USA Today, approximately 66 cases of suicide and over 1,300 cases of
psychiatric problems associated with the use of Accutane have been reported to the
FDA as of December 2000. In April 2002, Roche Pharmaceuticals was served with a
$70 million lawsuit claiming the medicine caused severe psychosis. Recent studies
show a possible link between Accutane and an increased risk of colon cancer.
